Anyway, after you’ve got your waffle iron, you’ll need a campfire and some ingredients…

This will make about six waffles in my iron. You could easy double all the ingredients if you are feeding a group or are hungry! It’s always better to have more waffles than not enough!

First off, you need to get that waffle iron over the fire, coal or embers and get it piping hot! If you have a grill, you can rest it on this or if you are going rustic like I tend to, you can just place it on some large branches or logs. I tend to place it up above the embers like this as you don’t want to get the waffle iron covered in ash.

While this is heating, beat the eggs in a large bowl with until light and fluffy. After this, beat in the flour, milk, vegetable oil into the mixture.

Now, mix in the other dry ingredients; the sugar, baking powder and salt. When you’ve got a mixture of a thick consistency, add in the vanilla extract. Don’t worry about there being a few lumps and bumps in it – it’ll still turn out fine.

Spray or brush the preheated waffle iron with some oil. Pour your waffle mixture into the hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown. Flipping half way through cooking. It won’t take too long! Serve hot adding any flavourings you desire.

Depending on the heat of the iron, it should take roughly 3 minutes to cook these. It’s very easy to check on them to get the perfect cook. Just remove from the fire (you don’t want ash getting on your hard earned waffles! You can now lift the lid and check they have your desired golden brown colour.

The first thing you are going to need to bake waffles on your campfire is a waffle iron. The one I personally have is the Petromax Waffle Iron and I’d definitely recommend it. As with all Petromax cooking equipment (I’ve already reviewed their Kettle, Dutch Oven and Hobo Stove), it is very, very well made and will serve you brilliantly for years and years.

Campfire Waffle Ingredients
