"Camping

As it was the Bank Holiday weekend, we decided to enjoy the Cornish coast and go camping. We had recently been to Sennen Cove and explored the Lands End peninsula, so wanted to change it up a little and go somewhere different. We finally chose the Tregurrian Camping and Caravanning Club Site at Watergate Bay due to the awesome location and excellent facilities available.

"Coleman

When we arrived, we were given the choice of two main areas. The staff we met were very friendly and suggested the best field to choose. We managed to get a pitch for our Coleman Rocky Mountain 5 tent with an electric hookup. The Coleman tent has a zipped slot so we were able to feed our power cable through and plug in our Coleman electric cool box. This was great as we could keep our cold food items cool for the whole trip. Without having to faff about with ice-blocks or anything!

"Coleman

After setting up everything, we thought we would make the most of the weather and take a wander down to the cliff edge and check out the view of the bay. The lady at reception was really helpful and gave us directions for the best route towards the beach.

"Watergate

The walk was easy and so peaceful. It took us through a neighbouring campsite, through a gate and along a field. After about five minutes, we reached the Cornish coastal path and were so impressed with the view. It’s such a pretty location and just a lovely walk. The flowers were in bloom all the way along, the sun was setting – just gorgeous.

"Watergate

"Watergate

We headed east along the path for a while and managed to find this amazing section of rock to scramble down and watch the final light of the day disappearing.

"Watergate

We headed back to the campsite and set up our new Primus Kuchoma Grill (check out the review here). Although pretty busy (as you’d expect on a bank holiday weekend), it was quiet and very relaxing during the evening. Once dinner was ready, we cracked open a couple of chilled beers and enjoyed some well cooked grub.

"Primus

We got up bright and early the next morning, grabbed our wetsuits and boards and headed straight for the beach. Although we could have driven down and parked at Watergate Bay, the weather was so fantastic, it would have been silly not to make the most of it and walk. We took the same route as the prevous day, but once we reached the coastal path, we took a left towards the beach.

"Watergate

It was a fantastic walk with the most amazing views all the way to Newquay’s Headland Hotel in the distance. The sea looked a wonderful blue and so inviting, I couldn’t wait to get down on to the beach to enjoy it.

"Watergate

Being pretty early, the beach was very quiet and had the perfect waves for a bit of surfing. So after unloading our stuff behind a nearby boulder, we popped our wetsuits on, grabbed our boards and made for the waves; Vicky had brought her trusty wooden belly board and I had my bodyboard.

"Watergate

It was such a fantastic morning. Aside from a couple of early morning surfers, we had the beach to ourselves. We both managed to catch lots of waves and just had so much fun. A little later on, we went back to the campsite to have some breakfast and relax. Thankfully, the campsite had a hose attached to fresh water, perfect for either washing a dog (this is a dog friendly campsite) or, as we did, for washing wetsuits. There is also a fence next to it in case you need to hang anything up to dry.

"Camping

As always, the Camping and Caravanning Club have such a great campsite. The staff are lovely, the facilities are well maintained, clean and all you’d need (toilets, showers, dish washing, shop/reception) and I cannot recommend the location enough. Two thumbs up from me!
