Cold winter’s nights are the time for snuggling inside with some hot, homemade, delicious comfort food. When it comes to this genre of food, apple crumble reigns supreme. I also call this particular recipe Crumble Apple as the emphasis is definitely on the crumble (that is the best bit) and not as much the apple.
I started off with a fairly standard Apple Crumble recipe, greedily doubled the amount of crumble and then made a couple other modifications. With Crumble being a school boy cookery lesson classic it is easily altered and adapted to suit the seasons and your taste buds. Enjoy:
Ingredients for the Apple
- 1kg of Apples – peeled, cored and sliced
- 50g Castor sugar
Ingredients for the Crumble
- 100g Castor sugar
- 200g Plain flour
- 100g Butter
The column to the right has a few additions you can
make to give it an extra special winter feel.
For my Winter Special, add this to the Apple:
- 175g Sultanas
- 5ml Mixed spice (or choose your own)
- 15ml finely grated orange rind
For my Winter Special, add this to the Crumble:
- 5ml Mixed spice (or choose your own)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Anything else: e.g. vanilla, coconut or ginger
Method
Step 1 – Arrange the peeled, cored and sliced apples in a well greased ovenproof dish. Sprinkle over the 50g of sugar.
Step 2 – To make the crumble topping, sift the flour & sugar into a food processor.
Step 3 – Blend the contents of the food processor until it looks like fine breadcrumbs.
Step 4 – Spoon the crumble over the apple slices until completely covered.
Step 5 – Put into a preheated oven at 180 and bake for 40 minutes or until the topping is crisp and golden.
Step 6 – Get in front of a log fire, serve the crumble up with some cream, custard or ice cream and pig out!
